How are your days looking? Crazy? Overwhelmed? Way too much to do? If you answered yes to any of those then my friend, it's time to look at how you are setting your day up. Are you creating priorities? Do you have a plan for the day?
In this post, I'm going to walk you through the entire process. Why you need priorities, what you need to do to set them up, and how you are going to achieve this. By the end of this post you are going to be saving yourself at least an hour a day by implementing these simple strategies.
This post is going to be quiet extensive. When I was doing my prep work for this post, I considered breaking this into two post but decided on keeping it at one.

Why do you need priorities?
So really why do you need to set priorities for yourself?
Simply put, setting your priorities makes your goals possible. Priorities creates your drive. This is ultimately what's going to get your butt in gear and allow you to achieve those things you been wanting to achieve.
It is important to have the answer to your why in the front of your mind always.
What is your why?
Your why is exactly that, why are you doing what you are doing.
You're overwhelmed and busy for a reason. That is the answer to your why.
Why are you baking cupcakes for the bake sale?
Why are you signed up for the carpool?
Why are you reorganizing your filing cabinet?
Whatever you are doing, there is a reason why you are doing it.
There is always a bigger picture.
I'm going to use myself as an example;
My life is let's just say booked. From the time I wake up, until the time I go to bed I've always got something going on. There are so many things in this world that I truly love doing and I don't want to give them up. Do I make sacrifices sometimes, yes, but not often.
Before I really looked at my life and knew that I needed to create priorities, life just wasn't workin' for me. This was me:
- Start a new project-not finish it
- Had meetings and clients everyday-was always late
- Go on vacation-yep, with my work with me
- Create a to do list-never complete it
These are just a few examples of what wasn't workin' for me.
Before I set priorities for myself I was working, volunteering, being a mother, and a wife. However, I barely had enough time for that. I literally never had time to breath.
Now that I have set priorities and created systems for myself I'm working, running 2 blogs, volunteering, marathon training, being an active mother, an wife, and I'm able to run a home without hiring any help at all.
I don't have assistants, VA's, or anyone behind the scenes with me.
It's about working smarter, not harder.
So how was I able to go from barely able to work, volunteer, mother, and be a wife to being able to do that and so much more? I sat down and really figured out what was most important to me.
What do you want your life to look like? I wanted so much more than that stress out feeling. You know that feeling of pure oh my gosh I'm late or I'm forgetting something, or I've just got way too much to do.
Don't get me wrong. I'm still busy. I just know how to handle it all.
I hope I've explain why it's so important for you to set priorities in your life. Now you are ready to figure out what your priorities are going to be.
What are your priorities?
What do you want your future life to look like?
What is most important to you?
These are the questions that you need to ask yourself. Why are you doing what your are doing? Remember that. Because, you need to be able to answer why all the time.
When you just don't want to or start feeling unmotivated to do what you are doing. You need to stop and ask yourself, why am I doing this? This will keep your motivation going.
I'm going to use myself as an example again.
Before I created priorities for myself was just kinda wingin' it everyday. No plan, no reason. Just goin'. Usually not finishing a darn thing, being a giant procrastinator, and being completely unmotivated. Really not know what was important. Not knowing how to set up a system so I knew that I was working on the most important thing always.
Until I knew what I wanted my life to look like in 5-10 years did I start really start producing what I needed to produce.
If you don't know where you want yourself to be or what you want to do there is no answer to your why!
So this is what I did (for those of you who do not know me, I LOVE lists), I sat down and made a list.
First I created a vision for myself. I wanted to answer my why.
What do I want my life to look like in 5-10 years?
Here's an example of what your 5-10 year list could look like. Keep in mind that you can add your own spin to it by adding photos and other visuals to really allow yourself a clear vision.
Why is this so important? You needed to figure out your why.
Now that you know where you want your life to look like, it's time to make a plan.
What do you need to accomplish to have this life in 5-10 years?
That will be a long list.
Here's an example:
It is almost like creating a to do list for your life.
So now that you know what you want your life to look like in 5-10 years this gives you the answer to your why.
Why am you doing this?
Because you want your life to be like "this" in the future.
By creating priorities you are setting yourself up to create the life that you want.
Now, does setting priorities only work for creating the life you want?
This is the process you can take for every little thing.
Want to write a book? Want to start a blog? Want to volunteer more at your child's school?
Whatever the situation is, you need to priorities this into your life. If you don't, you will lose focus, motivation, and your ultimate vision.
How to implement your priorities into your life?
Are you a visual person? I am.
To set your priorities out you need to do these things:
- Color code your priorities
- Set out planning time
- Prioritize your daily tasks
- Prioritize your project tasks
- Give due dates
- Prioritize your goals
You should create a to do list every single day. During your planning time, create a list of your daily tasks, prioritize them. Then, figure out what projects you are going to be working on, list the tasks, and prioritize them. Do you have goals? Break them up into tasks and assign priority.
Give each task a due date. If it's a daily task keep it reoccurring.
