Lately I've been asked time and time again about knowing your why. This is something that I talk about everyday in Facebook groups, webinars, coaching calls, and more. So today it is time that I create an extremely valuable post about knowing your why so you can stay motivated, effectively create priorities, and live a more balanced life.
In this post, I'm going to share the 3 things that you need to do to prioritize your life which will all come down to knowing your why. I've also put together a cheat sheet so you can leave here becoming motivated and ready to create priorities in your life.
Before I even get into talking about the 3 things your need to do to prioritize your life, you need a solid understanding of knowing your why. I realize that the term knowing your why can be super confusing. So, that is why I want to take a few moments to talk about knowing your why.
Knowing your why.
Knowing your why is more that 75% of the battle. Your why is what keeps you going. It is what keeps you motivated. When we stop focusing on that one thing, that's when you lose focus, motivation, and inspiration. We all know what that leads to...that horrible overwhelmed feeling that makes us unmotivated, uninspired, and procrastination sneaks its ugly little head in.
So how do you prevent it? Know your why.
Knowing your why. This is why you are doing what you are doing. Why you get up to do what you are doing? It's your big picture, your long term goal, your vision, your end result.
Here are some examples:
- writing a book
- starting a blog
- starting a new business
- volunteering at your child's school
- running a race
Knowing your why is going to get you through the tough times. It doesn't matter what it is, a project, a job, helping out a your child's school, there are those tough times. That is when knowing your why helps you get through it.
It is always good to go back to your bigger picture. Then when the tough get going, you can easily answer yourself that question. It may not make the situation better, but it will allow you to move past it.
Great, so now you know why you need to know your why, now it is time to put that into action. That is where the 3 things come into play. These are the 3 things you need to do to know your why which will allow you to prioritize your life.
Knowing your long term goals
In order to know your why and effectively prioritize yourself you need to know what you want out of your life. You need to know what your long term or 5-10 year goals are.
I know easier said than done, right!
If you were like me, and didn't have a clue as to where I wanted my life to be, that is totally okay. That is exactly what this post is all about. I want to walk you through what I did to create my own long term goals.
So how did I come up with my 5-10 year long term goals?
I literally starting writing down everything that I could think of that I would like to have in my future.
Then when I came to an overwhelming amount of items on my list I started looking at the list to see if there was some kind of common theme or similarities.
Then, I starting crossing unnecessary things off the list (which is very common when you are mind dumping).
By the time you have finished, you should have a pretty good idea of what your long terms goals should be.
Now it is important to validate your goals. Write them down!
These goals are your why. You are now going to be working towards making these happen.

So you have figured out your future vision also known as your 5-10 year goals. Now it is time to add another level to your why.
What are you passionate about?
Is this something that you think about? What keeps you motivated? What inspires you?
This is a different part of knowing your why. Sure you can "keep your eye on the prize" by creating long term goals but if they don't align with what you are passionate about, then you are going to lose interest, motivation, and probably give up and move on to the next shiny thing.
This is probably a topic that many people don't think about or talk about so I am going to.
Sure when I say passion you are probably thinking of Fabio and an ocean. Or maybe you think of Brad Pitt or some other hunky man. But that is not what I'm talking about here. I'm talk about that inner spark you have that really gets you excited.
So, it is time to do another mind dumping session. Using the same steps as before when you created your long term goals.
Grab a piece of paper and just start writing everything that makes you smile and motivates you to do more or be better.
I never considered myself a writer. I would have never picked writing as a profession however, when I start talking about how to save time and organize yourself, the words just start flowing. You literally cannot shut me up.
I'm really hoping this make sense to you.
Start at the beginning, grab a piece of paper, and just start dumping your thoughts down. Look for a common theme or similarities. Then start crossing things off your list that just don't fit.
If you find something on your list that makes your lip curl, cross it off. If you find something that you think, ummm naa, cross it off.
This list should only be filled with positivity and happiness.

Alright, you've created your 5-10 year goals, figured out what you are passionate about, now it is time for the third and final thing that you need to do to create priorities in your life. And that is...
Knowing your values
Yes, knowing your values or staying true to your values. This is by far the most important part of knowing your why. You can never budge from your core values. Your values are what make you who you are.
So what are your values?
We here a lot about different type of values but these are more than just what your political or religious beliefs are.
The University of Google defined core values as:
The core values are the guiding principles that dictate behavior and action. Core values can help people to know what is right from wrong; they can help companies to determine if they are on the right path and fulfilling their business goals' and they create an unwavering and unchanging guide.
So when you are creating your long term goals and you are creating your passionate list, they all need to abide by your values. Keeping you in line on the right path that are fulfilling your goals.
You know what is right from wrong, this is a little different. These values are what your what you have in mind for your long term goals, your why.
So when you are creating your long term goals and making your list of what motivates and inspires you, make sure that it fits together with where you want to be later on in life.

This will allow you to prioritize all area of your life. If it doesn't fit in with your vision, then it doesn't belong. Remember that every time you sign up for something new, or try a new project. By following this one rule, you will eliminate many head aches.
